The Jewish community of Montenegro has appointed its first ever chief rabbi since the country’s independence after the break-up of Yugoslavia.
The new chief rabbi is Luciano Moshe Prelevic, who also serves the Jewish community of Croatia as its chief rabbi in Zagreb. Rabbi Prelevic will travel once a month to Podgorica and will serve the small but active Jewish community in the city. Rabbi Prelevic’s father was from Montenegro and he speaks the language fluently.

On December 26, Rabbi Prelevic, together with Jewish community president and EJC affiliate, Jasha Alfandari, met with Montenegro’s Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic in the Prime Minister’s office in Podgorica.
A celebratory Shabbat was also held with the new chief rabbi in the community center.
