Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished the world a "Shana Tova," [a happy new year], in a video message from his residence in Jerusalem on Sunday.


Netanyahu opened the short clip saying, "Shana tova to all of you from our eternal capital, Jerusalem."


"Since last Rosh Hashana it has become evident to all but the bigoted and prejudiced that Israel stands out like a beacon of progress, of modernity, of democracy and of human rights in a region plagued by fanaticism, by terror, by unbelievable savagery," he continued.....

"We are united, proud of our past, confident of our future," he said.


On his Twitter feed on Sunday, Rouhani posted a notice celebrating the common ancestry of Jews and Muslims.

"May our shared Abrahamic roots deepen respect and bring peace and mutual understanding," Rouhani tweeted. "L'Shanah Tovah."


US President Barack Obama released a recorded message to the Jewish community on Friday, wishing it a happy new year as it prepares to ring in Rosh Hashana.


"Jewish tradition teaches us that, for the next ten days, the Book of Life is open," the president said. "As millions of Jews ask God to inscribe their name in that book, we recognize how much lies beyond our control. Yet during these Days of Awe we also recognize our tremendous power to make a difference, in our lives and in our world.”

In letter, Putin wishes Jews of Russia 'a sweet and happy new year'

In a special letter sent to Russia's Chief Rabbi Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin wished the Jewish community throughout the country a "sweet and happy new year" on the eve of Rosh Hashana, according to Russian State media

The note, addressed to the office of Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, also connoted Putin's admiration for the Russian Jewish community's strength and unity, saying "For centuries, Jewish values inspire lofty ideals" while bridging together "relations among different peoples...through charity (and) education, all in the interest of the public good."
