- On July 29, 2019, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem. 

She expressed deep sorrow for the tragedy of the Jewish people in Croatia, Europe and the world and sympathy for the victims' families and descendants. 

She lit the Eternal Flame in the Hall of Remembrance and laid a wreath at the slab beneath which are victims' ashes.

The Croatian President presented a special gift to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Yad Vashem director Dorit Novak - an important book written by Dr. Esther Gitman - “Alojzije Stepinac - Pillar of Human Rights” .

Yad Vashem is Israel's official memorial to the victims of the Shoah/Holocaust. It is dedicated to preserving the memory of the dead; honoring Jews who fought against their oppressors and gentiles who selflessly aided Jews in need.

As of February 1, 2019, 117 Croatians have been honored with this title of “Righteous” by Yad Vashem for saving Jews during World War II. Bl.Alojzije Stepinac still awaits recognition as “Righteous”.
