HOLOCAUST WRITING & ART CONTEST

 

"I love this contest because it encourages my students to think about how the Holocaust affects them personally (and they can practice for the WASL!)."  - Teacher, Seattle   

Contest Topic:

Think of a person affected by the Holocaust who you will remember for a long time. (This might be someone you have read about, studied, seen in a movie, or even met.)

Writing:

Write a multi-paragraph letter to this person explaining why he or she is hard to forget.

Art:

Create a piece of art for this person that deptics something you have learned. 

 

Deadline: Entries being accepted now through March 20, 2009.

TEACHER WORKSHOP - Defiance: Armed Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust

TEACHER WORKSHOP - DEFIANCE: Armed Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust.

December 15, 2009.  4:00 - 8:00pm. The 2100 Building, Seattle.  $20. Clock hours available. Light dinner provided.  Pre-registration required.
In conjunction with the soon-to-be-released film, "Defiance" the Holocaust Center and the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation will offer a workshop which will include ready-to-use teaching materials on the partisan experience, the ethical implications of war and resistance, and the role of women in the partisans.  Sponsored by the Holocaust Center and the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation (JPEF).

Stories of Resuce during the Holocaust
January 12 - February 13, 2009. Suzzello Library, University of Washington, Seattle.

Sponsored by the Holocaust Center and the UW Polish Endowment Committee. An exhibition of photo-portraits by Chris Schwarz that honors the Righteous Among the Nations living in the Krakow region today. Programs will take place each Thursday throughout the showing, including:

  • Jan. 15 - Exhibit Opening. Keynote speaker - Stanlee Stahl, Executive Vice President, Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR):  "Challenges of the Rescuers and the Rescued." Kane Hall, UW, Seattle. 7:30pm.
  • Jan. 22 - Teacher Workshop.  "Rescuers and the Rescued." 4:30 - 7:30pm. $20. Clock hours available. Light dinner provided. Pre-registration required. Allen Auditorium, Suzzello-Allen Library, UW, Seattle.  Register or email ikennedy@wsherc.org for more info.

Defiance MovieDec/Jan - "Defiance" - New movie opens in Seattle

Based on the book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans (1993) by Nechama Tec. The true story of Jews during the Holocaust who created a community in the forests to fight against the Third Reich.  By 1944, this forest group, committed to fighting the Nazis with armed resistance and rescuing Jews, numbered close to 1200 persons. Watch trailer.

 

March 5 - Witnesses to the Holocaust: Hillel Speaker Series 

Leo Hymas, Liberator of Buchenwald and veteran of Patton's Third Army will share his experiences. Hillel, UW, Seattle. Free and open to the public.
 

March 12 - 13 - Community Program and Teacher Seminar, Spokane.

  • March 12 - Community evening program with a presentation from a Holocaust survivor. Details available soon.
  • March 13 - Teaching about the Holocaust: A Seminar for Educators. 8:30am-3:30pm. East Valley Middle School. $20. Clock hours available. Lunch and materials provided. Pre-registration required. More details available soon. For questions, email ikennedy@wsherc.org.  

April 21 - Yom Hashoah: Holocaust Remembrance Day. 

Witnesses to the Holocaust: Hillel Speaker Series 

Magda Schaloum, Auschwitz survivor, will share her story at Hillel, UW, Seattle. Free and open to the public.

 

April 26 - Yom Hashoah: Holocaust Remembrance Day Community Program
A panel of Holocaust survivors will share their experiences. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions in a Town Hall style setting.  Writing and Art Contest winners will be awarded. Mercer Island.
